The first modified Walrus class submarine has been launched, a nice project of Nevesbu! December 2015 - Thursday, 3 December, the first modified Walrus class submarine was launched, the Zr.Ms. Zeeleeuw. The submarine is now ready to be commissioned. The launch is an important milestone in the Life Extension Program (LEP) of the Walrus class submarines. As the Platform System Integrator, Nevesbu has played an important role in this project. Nevesbu carried out the engineering necessary to allow embedding of all modifications (including the new systems) on-board the submarines. Together with its partners, Nevesbu ensured that all subsystems are able to operate as an integrated whole.

The objective of the Walrus class submarines LEP is to prolong their service life to at least 2025 and to increase their operability in coastal waters. To meet the new technical standards and requirements, the submarine has to be completely modernised and provided with new equipment, cable ducts, piping and technology. A puzzle which demands efficient use of the available space and effective implementation of the state-of-the-art engineering. In May 2013, the LEP officially started. Since then, approximately 110-150 people have worked on the large-scale maintenance of the first submarine. The next milestone will take place in March 2016 when the next submarine will be ready to be launched:  the Zr.Ms. Dolfijn.
